Emergency Procedures And Supplies ? What You Need And Need ...

Nothing gets your blood flowing like an emergency. On Saturday after returning from some errands, I saw some smoke in the foothills of Colorado Springs. It seems like half of the state is on fire as it is. The city is below normal on rainfall so everything is extremely dry. It has been windy here and humidity even on a humid day this time of year is 10% at the most making for extremely dangerous fire conditions.

That was Saturday when the fire got started. Overnight the fire grew and was headed in at least three directions which made fighting it very difficult. One of those directions was towards the town of Manitou Springs which is just west of Colorado Springs. At 1:30 in the morning an evacuation notice was given to the residents of some 3000 homes to get out. As of six o?clock Sunday morning they were going house to house to make sure that everybody had left.

The sky Sunday morning was an eerie orange color-very pretty and unusual but filled with smoke which makes breathing tough.

The news reports this morning were that flames were as high as 1500 feet moving down one ridge line. That?s 15 stories tall. As of right now winds are actually relatively calm at 15 miles an hour. They?re supposed to kick up to 30 miles an hour later on this morning and into today.

When you have an emergency or faced with a disaster it helps to have an emergency preparedness plan and even more important it helps to have some emergency food supplies on hand. Yesterday news reports were telling people that they needed to have a 72 hour supply of medicine and food to take with them.

How would you and your family handle a disaster or emergency? What should you do for emergency preparedness or disaster preparedness?

There?s no way to get a three-day supply of food for a family of four in the space of 15 minutes which is the average time people had to get out of their houses. The emergency Food Supply could be one less thing for you to worry about. It has a shelf life of 25 years. They are packaged in special containers which removes all oxygen. These food supplies can be used for any emergency or disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, flood or in our case a fire. It is an essential for emergency preparedness and disaster preparedness.

Here is a book that can help you develop an Emergency Plan just in case one strikes.

Does High Cost Education Equal Real World Preparation ...

In this short video, presented by Applied Transformation, Inc., Roger Green asks me about my view on the idea that high cost education doesn?t necessarily prepare students for the real world.

In answering him, I talk about my feelings on where business networking fits into the world of formal education and I share some statistics about the true effectiveness of networking which, to me, are mind boggling; I also tell a personal story about having lunch with the Dean of Business at a prominent university and how his words to me speak volumes about the current position business networking holds in the world of higher learning.

What are your personal feelings on where business networking currently fits into, or currently should fit into, the world of formal education?? Did you study business at the university level?? If so, what was your experience??Did you receive any education about networking while you were working on your degree(s)?? Please share your thoughts/experiences in the comments section.

Not-so-precious: Stripping gold from AFM probes allows better measurement of picoscale forces

Not-so-precious: Stripping gold from AFM probes allows better measurement of picoscale forces [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Jun-2012

Gold is not necessarily preciousat least not as a coating on atomic force microscope (AFM) probes.

JILA researchers found that removing an AFM probe's gold coatinguntil now considered helpfulgreatly improved force measurements performed in a liquid, the medium favored for biophysical studies such as stretching DNA or unfolding proteins. As described in Nano Letters,* stripping the gold from the diving-board-shaped probe, or cantilever, with a brief chemical bath improved the precision and stability of force measurements about 10-fold. The advance is expected to quickly and broadly benefit the fields of biophysics and nanoscience.

JILA is a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder.

"What I find interesting about this experiment is it's so incredibly simple. It takes a minute to strip the gold off a commercial cantilever and you get a 10-fold improvement in force precision," says NIST/JILA physicist Thomas Perkins.

To measure forces at the molecular scale, an AFM's cantilever attaches to a molecule with its pointed end and pulls; the resulting deflection of the cantilever is measured. The forces are in the realm of piconewtons (pN), or trillionths of a newton. A unit of force, one newton is roughly the weight of a small apple.

Cantilevers are typically made of silicon or silicon nitride and coated with gold on both sides to reflect light. Perkins discovered the gold coating was a problem while his research group was probing the folding and unfolding of protein molecules over time periods of seconds to minutes. The group previously improved AFM position stability** and holds a related patent,*** but then discovered that the force was drifting. "It's counterintuitive," says Perkins. "Everyone has assumed you needed gold for the enhanced reflectivity, when in fact, gold is clearly the dominant source of force drift on short and long time scales."

"Gold exhibits a sort of complex elastic property in high-precision measurements," Perkins explains. "When you bend gold, it creeps a little bit, like silly putty. Further, the lore in the field is that gold can crack, it can age, and molecules can bind to itall of which may change its mechanical properties. This problem is even worse when you do biological experiments in liquid."

AFM force measurements in liquid typically have had precision (error range) of plus or minus 5 to 10 pN. By stripping the gold JILA researchers reduced the error by 10 times, to about 0.5 pN for measurements on both short and long timescales. Researchers can now precisely measure fast processes, such as proteins folding and unfolding 50 times per second, over long time periods of several minutes. Significantly, the results were achieved with commercially available microscopes and cantilevers, so the practical benefits can be applied quickly for any AFM force measurements and imaging. AFM can now compete with optical traps and magnetic tweezers in terms of sensitivity.

Atkins-type diets weigh heavily on heart | Health X Pert Articles ...

WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) ? Within minutes of the Supreme Court?s decision, Florida Democrats and Republicans began firing off statements either labeling the Affordable Care Act as either a burdensome new tax or lauding it is as monumental ruling in American history. For the most part, Republicans came down hard on the decision and moved the talking point away from health care itself and instead tried to recast the decision as a large new tax all Americans would have to pay. ?The tax question was repeatedly refuted by members of Congress who helped pass this health care takeover,? Governor Rick Scott wrote. ?The Justices have declared that the provision of ObamaCare is a judicially mandated tax. A new tax pure and simple. This is just another burden the federal government has put on American families and small businesses.? Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi gave a nuanced early answer that sought to salvage some semblance of a victory after being turned away for the most part by the Supreme Court. ?The Court did say, however, that they (Congress) cannot do this under the Commerce Clause; that you cannot force a person to purchase a product just by being alive,? Bondi told the News Service of Florida. ?However, they found that this is a tax. And that?s contrary to everything our president?s been saying. So this is a tax on the American people and that?s how it was upheld.? However, according to the solicitor general?s argument before the Court in March, if the law wasn?t valid under the Commerce Clause, which a 7-2 majority of the court said, then the law was constitutional under the taxing power of Congress. Florida Commissioner Adam Putnam was the first local politician to react with a statement and took exception with the health care law regarding health issues. ?Unconstitutional or not, the so-called ?Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act? is the wrong policy for reforming health care and the wrong direction for America,? said Commissioner Putnam. ?Individual liberties and the doctor-patient relationship took a step back today.? Click Here To Read What CBSMiami Facebook Fans Have To Say About The Supreme Court?s Decision Click Here To See What The Decision Means To Florida ?What?s important to remember is that what the Court rules on is whether something is constitutional or not, not whether it?s a good idea,? Florida Senator Marco Rubio said. ?And while the Court has said that the law is constitutional, it remains a bad idea for our economy, and I hope that in the fall we will have a majority here that will not just repeal this law, but replace it with real solutions that will insure ore people and cost a lot less money.? Florida Congressman Connie Mack, IV, echoed Bondi?s statement in his statement that targeted his opponent in November, Senator Bill Nelson, a democrat. ?ObamaCare not only kills jobs, burdens families and runs up our already-massive debt, it oversteps its bounds by stripping Americans of their freedoms and mandating compliance with a government edict by calling the law a tax,? Mack wrote. On the other side of the political aisle, Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson of Miami lauded the Supreme Court?s decision. ?This decision is a huge victory for the people of District 17 and all across the country. Because of this ruling, everyone in South Florida will benefit from critical patient protections, $1 trillion in savings over the next two decades, better coverage for families ? including preventive care to keep people healthy ? and greater accountability for the insurance industry,? Wilson wrote in a statement. Senator Bill Nelson touted the reforms while trying to pivot back towards the economy. ?Our system was broken and we had to do something.? Insurance companies were refusing to cover people or dropping those who got sick,? Senator Nelson wrote. ?So, we passed legislation to prevent insurers from running roughshod over people.? And today, the Supreme Court upheld most of these reforms.? Now, I think it?s time we finish the job of fixing our economy and creating more jobs.? Republican Congressman David Rivera reacted strongly against the law. ?It is in the best interest of our nation?s economy to repeal the job-killing health care law and replace it with common sense reforms that address what is wrong with the health insurance system in America,? Rivera wrote. ?We must pass legislation that lower costs and protect American jobs, not threaten them. We must move toward a system that welcomes patient choice and flexibility, instead of more government involvement, by ensuring Americans the ability to make medical decisions without bureaucratic interference.? US Representative Alan West called the decision a ?sad day for America.? ?This is a sad day for Americans, as they will be taxed to pay for benefits they may not need or want as part of the insurance they are forced to buy. With this decision, Congress has been granted infinite taxation power, and there are no longer any limits on what the federal government can tax its citizens to do,? West said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. ?Benjamin Franklin did indeed state, ?In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.? However, Dr. Franklin never envisioned the federal government would use its power of taxation to punish people for not purchasing health care.? Today, individual sovereignty in America has been defeated.? Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, also the chairpersonof the Democratic National Committee, saluted the Court?s decision. ?As a breast cancer survivor and one of 129 million Americans with a pre-existing condition, I am overjoyed that the Supreme Court upheld the right of every American to have access to quality, affordable health care insurance,? Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. ?It is wonderful news that the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of this landmark law, and I reaffirm my commitment to working to find innovative solutions that keep us on track toward full implementation of the Affordable Care Act so we can ensure affordable, accessible, quality health care for all Americans.?

Art Adverts Start a New Wave | City Arts | City Arts

Advertising strategies gearing up for next season take art out the wilderness. CityArts surveys the new media tacticians who bring Broadway shows, museums and other art venues to popular attention. Art and its patrons all benefit from millennial art advertising?s new tactical strategies. Part 1 of a two-part series.

Raven-Symon? in Sister Act gets a new ad campaign.

Raven-Symon? in Sister Act gets a new ad campaign.

New Yorkers with long memories can?t shake the specter of the TV commercials for the original runs of A Chorus Line and Evita?the same commercial execution, using identical snippets of song for maximum numbing effect, running for what felt like years. The Evita spot became so famously infuriating a fixture it occasioned one of SCTV?s most inspired commercial parodies: Andrea Martin starring in a road show of Indira and?ingeniously intermixing infomercial annoyance?Joe Flaherty as a bandoliered, yodeling Slim Whitman.

Marketing the performing and museum arts today seems like science fiction in comparison. You might be up late watching a WNET symphonic performance when an on-screen icon prompts you to hold up your Shazam-enabled smart phone. The app will sample the sound from the TV, identify the performance and give you the option of downloading the MP3 or ask you a question to win a coupon for a matinee in your neighborhood, having already correlated the cable or satellite box with your ZIP code and assiduously segmented demographic information on your probable age, gender, income, past buying habits and even whether you prefer cats or dogs. Why? Well, maybe dog lovers like Wagner and cat lovers Stravinsky. Who knows? They?ve got their reasons.

Most importantly, the phone will be connected to the sponsoring organization?s seating chart, allowing you to pick a seat for a performance, charge your preloaded credit card and download an electronic ticket you can present at the concert hall by flashing your smart phone at a scanner.

If that interactive/invasive process seems more like something for you than your remote-control-challenged mother, you?re not far off. In fact, the growing generational divide between patrons of the arts and their media consumption habits was the blue-haired elephant queued up for tickets in the living room at the Arts Reach conference at New York University last March. Put bluntly: Can you reach the graying and balding with tweeting and social networking?

Exceptions notwithstanding, there?s no mistaking certain demographic trends. Big-ticket performing arts companies?the symphony orchestras, the chamber music societies, the Broadway belt that needs tourists to shell out $86.28 for the worst seats in the mezzanine?count on a privileged sector of the baby-boom generation and older.

Trends indicate that those might be the last generations who take a daily newspaper. Newspapers? Internet-edition paywalls are, for most publications that have tried them, useless for converting paid subscribers and generating revenue. Yet, printing is prohibitively expensive and readership is sliding in favor of eyeballs online, where banner ads aren?t making enough money, despite the audience.

Facebook boasts hundreds of millions of users, obsessively checking in several times a day?that?s reach and frequency. But the company?s IPO revealed that although half of Facebookies use mobile devices to access the site, they are devices for which there is no Facebook advertising model?yet.

More than 44 percent of Americans have smart phones, but they skew young. The elderly have gone from the poorest group in America to the wealthiest, with the disposable (literally, some critics would argue) income to pay $262 to watch a play. But arts companies need to refresh their audience with Gens X and Y and millennials to survive as something more than museums of tourism.

?While the traditional media audience has moved on, the rates have increased,? objects Doug Mobray, president of Mogo Arts Marketing in Corte Madera, Calif., pointing to a counterintuitive direction of newspaper ad rates and readers. ?The cost per impression has increased substantially.?

The decline of print readership, exaggerated by the generational split between baby boomers and older and nearly newspaper-free youth, is the ?first and most obvious change,? says Tom Greenwald, executive creative director at SpotCo, one of New York?s specialized arts marketing agencies.

?It used to be a foregone conclusion that the lion?s share of a media budget would go to The New York Times,? he says. ?Now you might advertise there just to please the stars and agents, but the campaign is going to be mostly online banner ads and social networking.?

Greenwald says a lot of live entertainment still targets the 55-year-old woman; though she might not be constantly on Facebook, she?s probably online somewhere, and sites such as broadway.com can gear their initiatives toward that demographic. She may not be tweeting or playing Facebook games, but she will find some online point of purchase.

Greenwald says more than half of Broadway ticket sales happen in online transactions rather than phone sales. ?It?s gotten to the point where they don?t even put phone numbers in the ads,? he points out.

Now Greenwald oversees Facebook campaigns that celebrate the 20,000 fans of Chicago with ticket giveaways. Samuel L. Jackson tweets to Twitter followers about The Mountaintop. A ?nun? from Sister Act performs a video blog. Most shows, Greenwald says, use a combination of ?social networking presence and refreshing websites. The great thing about the Internet is that it is an extension of the show. In the tradition of those Evita TV ads, you can run video content with sound.?

He ?roadblocks? (commands all of the display ad space) select sites. Banner ads can be programmed with Flash and HTML to sport animation and sound. Live clips can be constructed from B-roll of the shows themselves, but they can be cinematic and even conceptual. Advertising on TV is now supplemented by so-called earned media?working the morning news shows least likely to be DVRed. ?It?s expensive to buy TV,? Greenwald says, ?but everyone works it.?

Soliciting the South Park generation for The Book of Mormon means a website with a working doorbell and online campaigns imploring fans to ?Like us on Facebook? and ?Follow us on Twitter.?

It?s not as if Spotco abjures traditional outdoor advertising or print, but ?spending $110,000 on The New York Times won?t pay off,? Greenwald declares.

Clint White, president of New York?s WiT Media and lecturer at Sotheby?s Institute of Art, acknowledges the arts audience is ?growing older, absolutely. But the good news is that those patrons are converted and believe in chamber music?or theatre or causes or art?and all have made it clear that they?re interested. All we have to do is tell them what?s going on and they?ll sign up. It?s the other [younger] audience that has to be introduced.?

Next week: Broadway comes alive through new media.

Senate leaders say they have student loan deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate's top Democrat and Republican said Tuesday that they've reached a deal that would prevent interest rates on college loans from doubling beginning this weekend for millions of students. But House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has yet to decide whether the pact will be acceptable to his Republican-run chamber.

The agreement, if approved by Congress, would spell an end to one of this election-season's higher profile conflicts between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans. Even so, the battle has been a bitter one, with Republicans accusing the White House of dragging out the fight to score political points and Democrats accusing the GOP of blocking action on the issue.

"The president's been largely uninvolved in that, but Senator Reid and I have an understanding that we think will be acceptable to the House," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters.

"We basically have the student loan issue worked out," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said separately.

Under the agreement, interest rates for new subsidized Stafford loans would remain at 3.4 percent through next June 30.

Without congressional action, interest rates on the loans would double to 6.8 percent for new loans beginning July 1, this Sunday, for 7.4 million students the government estimates would get such loans over the next year.

That increase, should it occur, would not affect loans currently held by students. The higher rate would cost the average student an extra $1,000 over the life of the loan, which typically takes more than a decade to repay.

White House press secretary Jay Carney issued a statement expressing support for the agreement, adding, "We hope that Congress will complete the legislative process and send a bill to the president as soon as possible."

About $5 billion of the measure's $6 billion cost would come from Democratic pension-related proposals, including a change in how companies compute the money they must set aside to fund their pensions. The change would make their contributions more consistent year to year and in effect lower them ? which business desires ? and result in fewer corporate tax deductions for those payments.

In addition, fees that companies pay to have their pensions insured by the quasi-government Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. would rise to reflect increases in inflation.

The remaining funds would come from a GOP plan to limit federal subsidies for Stafford loans for undergraduates to six years. Currently, the government charges no interest while students are still in school, even if it takes them longer than six years to graduate.

The financing was described by Senate Democratic and GOP aides who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the emerging agreement.

Asked if Boehner would sign off on the agreement, spokesman Michael Steel said, "We'll take a look."

The pension money was also being discussed as way to finance an extension of federal transportation programs, which expire this weekend. Leaders were hoping agreement on both bills could be approved before Congress leaves town for its July 4 break at week's end.

Obama spent part of this spring traveling to college campuses to underscore his effort to prevent the interest rates from rising. In so doing, he was appealing to student-age voters who supported him strongly in the 2008 presidential election.

Hoping to pre-empt Obama from using student loans as an issue this fall, GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney said in April that he supported extending the lower loan rates. Congressional GOP leaders said they supported an extension as well, though some rank-and-file Republicans still oppose the idea, arguing it is too expensive and that financial markets should set the lending rates.

In recent weeks, the disagreement was over how to pay for the extension.

Sandusky lawyers may use TV tape error in appeal

(Reuters) - Lawyers for Jerry Sandusky sought a mistrial before his conviction for child sex abuse on the grounds that prosecutors showed jurors an inaccurate version of a bombshell NBC News interview with the former football coach, and the mistake may now form part of the basis for an appeal.

In response to a subpoena, NBC News turned over three versions of Bob Costas' NBC News interview with Sandusky, which aired last November on different NBC shows.

One of those versions, which was broadcast on the 'Today' show, contained an erroneous repetition of a key question and answer - about whether Sandusky was sexually attracted to young boys, Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania attorney general said on Sunday.

The repetition, Sandusky's lawyers contend, made it appear to jurors that he was stonewalling.

"It wasn't noticed by, it wasn't noticed by us, but it became obvious when it played in court," Frederiksen told Reuters.

NBC News spokeswoman Amy Lynn confirmed this account on Sunday.

SANDUSKY FACES 400-YEAR SENTENCE

On Friday, a jury in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, convicted Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, of 45 counts of child sex abuse and child endangerment. Sandusky, 68, is expected to be sentenced to more than 400 years in prison.

Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola said NBC's error would form part of the basis for an appeal. "Oh my goodness, yes," he said, when asked about whether it could be used in an appeal.

The mistrial request was denied by Judge John Cleland, who sought to remedy the situation by providing the jury with an accurate transcript of the exchange, another Sandusky attorney Karl Rominger said.

It's the second time in a matter of months that an error in a ?Today' show broadcast has put the morning program at the center of a national criminal trial. In April, 'Today' aired a misleadingly edited phone call between the police and the man who shot Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

The Sandusky case has rocked the world of U.S. elite college sports and led to the firing of the university's president and Joe Paterno, a College Football Hall of Fame member who won more games as head coach than any other Division I coach. Paterno died of lung cancer in January, five months to the day before the verdict against his long-time assistant was handed down.

Amendola said another basis for a future appeal could be a request he and Rominger made to resign from the case at the start of jury selection because the lawyers didn't feel they were given enough time between their client's arrest in November and the June trial date. He said the request was denied by Judge Cleland.

UNDERAGE BOYS

In the Sandusky interview with NBC, Costas asks, "Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underage boys?" according to an NBC News transcript.

Sandusky responded, "Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?"

But in the "Today" version, which was played for jurors and is still available on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb49dXT_44M), the exchange was repeated.

The interview was originally aired correctly on NBC News' new magazine show, ?Rock Center' on November 14. The erroneous version that repeated the exchange aired the following morning on ?Today.'

In a statement, NBC's Lynn said: "Under subpoena, NBC News turned over three versions of the Costas interview to prosecutors, including the 'Today' version with the error in it. Prosecutors used the 'Today' version, not realizing it included a technical glitch, and played it for the jury.

"After court that day, NBC News executives had a series of discussion with the prosecutors, and after some internal investigation were able to determine that the glitch originated on 'Today.' NBC News executives explained the situation to the court, and Judge Cleland sought to remedy the situation by giving the jury instructions to regard only a transcript of the full interview that was subsequently provided to them, not any audio that was played for them by prosecutors."

"EMBARRASSING"

A source on the prosecution team acknowledged that prosecutors played the ?Today' version, which contained the error, without reviewing it carefully beforehand.

"Was it embarrassing?" the source asked. "It was certainly embarrassing. Was it a mistake? It was clearly a mistake." The source also said NBC News executives expressed regret to the court.

"Did they say, ?I'm sorry?' I can't recall those exact words,'' the source said. "Were they apologetic? Yes."

In the incident in April, ?Today' aired a misleadingly edited tape of a call to police from George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot Trayvon Martin. That edit made it appear that Zimmerman told police that Martin was black without being prompted. In fact, Zimmerman did so only when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.

Several ?Today' staffers were disciplined over that incident, NBC News president Steve Capus said at the time. Network sources told Reuters a Miami-based ?Today' producer was fired.
