Facebook Better Get Mobile Quick. 102M People Accessed Solely From Mobile In June, Up 23% Since March

Facebook Desktop Shifts To MobileThere's a staggering new statistic in Facebook's 10-Q SEC document today: 102 million people accessed Facebook solely from mobile in June, a massive 23% increase over the 83 million mobile-only users in March. 18.7% of its 543 million monthly mobile users don't even visit its desktop site.?That means if it can't make its mobile advertising generate a lot more money within the next year, revenue could plummet like its stock price, down 6.2% today to $21.71. Another dead-serious new stat is that Facebook only grew 10% to 168 million in the US this last year, compared to the global average of 29%.

Rapid assessment of plant drought tolerance possible with new method

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? UCLA life scientists, working with colleagues in China, have discovered a new method to quickly assess plants' drought tolerance. The method works for many diverse species growing around the world. The research, published in the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution, may revolutionize the ability to survey plant species for their ability to withstand drought, said senior author Lawren Sack, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

"This method can be applied rapidly and reliably for diverse species across ecosystems worldwide," he said of the federally funded research by the National Science Foundation.

Droughts, which are a major threat to plants worldwide, are expected to become both more frequent and more severe with climate change, Sack said. Assessing species' vulnerabilities to drought is essential to predict their responses to climate change and plan their conservation, he said.

Earlier this year, Sack and his research team resolved a decades-old debate about what leaf traits best predict drought tolerance for diverse plant species worldwide. However, these leaf traits are too difficult and time-consuming to measure, often taking up to two days for one species, Sack said.

The UCLA team worked with collaborators at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Gardens (XTBG) in Yunnan, China, to develop a method for measuring leaf drought tolerance that is 30 times faster. It is based on an important trait known as "turgor loss point." During drought, the leaf cells' water becomes harder to replace. The turgor loss point is reached when leaf cells become so dehydrated their walls become flaccid. This cell-level loss of turgor -- or swollenness -- causes the leaf to become limp and wilted, and the plant cannot grow, Sack said.

The new method, based on a technique called "osmometry," requires only about 10 minutes per leaf, sufficient to make a fast estimate for a given species.

Plant growth depends on the ability to withstand enormous losses of water to evaporation when they open their pores, or stomata, to take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. The amount of evaporation a plant can tolerate depends on the water pressure inside of its cells, which in turn depends on its turgor potential; the pushing force of water against the inside of the cell walls; and the osmotic potential inside the cell, which is to say, the pulling force of dissolved salt molecules on the water molecules -- the same force that makes water with salt added boil at a higher temperature.

Plant cells need to maintain their turgor pressure to hold up their cell walls, but as evaporation dries out the cells, they lose turgor pressure,

said co-author Christine Scoffoni, a UCLA graduate student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

At the turgor loss point, saltier cells have a stronger pulling force holding the water molecules inside the cell. Plants with saltier cells can keep their stomata open in drier conditions, Sack said.

The turgor loss point, which varies widely among species, is a powerful determinant of the plant's drought tolerance. The UCLA team previously showed that the turgor loss point can predict the dryness of the ecosystem from which a plant species comes.

"Drought-tolerant plants typically have low turgor loss points and saltier sap," said lead author Megan Bartlett, a UCLA graduate student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. "Some plant species even load more salt into their cells when they experience a drought to lower their turgor loss point and improve their drought tolerance."

Researchers have been measuring turgor loss point and osmotic potential, or cell saltiness, for decades. Once the UCLA team demonstrated that these are the key traits to predict drought tolerance, they realized that a stumbling block to their use is the difficulty of their measurement. These traits are typically measured by generating a relationship called the pressure-volume (p-v) curve. To produce a p-v curve, a leaf is dried slowly. Leaf water pressure and water mass are repeatedly measured, requiring nearly constant attention from a researcher for up to two days for a single species.

"After we identified these traits for measuring drought tolerance, our next challenge was to make it possible to measure them quickly for many diverse species," Bartlett said.

To hasten the process, the UCLA team and XTBG froze small discs of leaf tissue in liquid nitrogen to break the cell walls and mix the cell sap. The saltiness of the cell sap could then be measured with an instrument called an osmometer, which is typically used to measure osmotic potential in urine or blood. (Earlier studies compared osmotic potential measured by p-v curves with those from the osmometer, but the method had not been refined enough to produce reliable results for turgor loss point.)

The UCLA-XTBG team refined the method so that it can be applied in 10 minutes. They made measurements for 30 species from very different ecosystems, including tropical forest in China and the California chaparral. From this comparison, they developed the first equations for predicting p-v curve turgor loss point and cell saltiness from osmometer measurements.

"This approach has great potential for determining drought tolerance for thousands of species that are threatened by climate change, and to answer important questions about the relationship between drought tolerance and plant evolution and ecology that were just not feasible before," Sack said.

UK stocks post modest gains on stimulus hopes

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's top shares were modestly higher on Friday, consolidating the strong gains seen in the previous session on hopes that central bank meetings next week will bring new steps to help the struggling global economy.

Another crop of UK bluechip results provided the main direction early on, with the numbers once again proving mixed, keeping investors uncertain on the overall earnings picture.

Barclays was the top FTSE 100 gainer, up 5.1 percent, after the bank beat expectations with an underlying half-year profit of more than 4 billion pounds, boosted by a strong top-line performance from its investment banking unit.

"We see these results as supportive given the discounted valuation ... While we recognise that post significant management change and the Libor issue Q2 is somewhat backward looking, the resilience versus peers in the investment bank in Q2 and the action on costs is encouraging," RBC Europe analyst Fiona Swafield said in a note.

Barclays was among Thomson Reuters StarMine's lowest ranked companies for earnings quality in the FTSE 100 with a score of 12 out of 100 prior to the release of these results, compared with the sector median of 38.

That means its earnings growth is expected to be difficult to sustain over the next 12 months based on what has contributed to those earnings in the recent past.

Other blue chip banks were also in demand, providing the main support for the FTSE 100 index as the sector reporting season continued, and with investors' risk appetite boosted by the hopes for possible fresh stimulus measures, or at least hints of them, from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of England meetings all due next week.

Miners also lent their strength to the blue chips, as copper prices pushed higher on the hopes of new measures to boost global economies.

But Anglo American missed out on the mining sector's gains. It shed 2.4 percent after profits dropped almost 40 percent in the first half of the year as faltering global economic growth hit the prices of key commodities like iron ore and platinum, but failed to bring down costs.

PEARSON POOR

Pearson was the top blue chip faller, down 4.8 percent after the British education and publishing group said 2012 was turning out to be tougher than it expected. Profit fell by 10 percent in the first half, although it said it could still achieve growth for the full year.

At 0803 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was up 3.05 points, or 0.1 percent, at 5,576.21, having reached 5,595.04 in early trade, with the 5,600 big figure proving a barrier.

The blue chip index jumped 1.4 percent on Thursday after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged to do whatever was needed to preserve the euro, boosting hopes for more decisive action on the currency bloc's debt crisis.

"Yesterday, risk appetite received a much needed bump-up by Draghi saying the central bank will do whatever it takes to preserve the euro," said Ishaq Siddiqi, Market Strategist at ETX Capital.

"But despite the gains spurred by the Draghi-inspired rally, room for further upside appears to be capped given that there has been no new developments on the (euro zone bailout fund) ESM's long-term function, while caution looms ahead of U.S. economic and corporate data out today."

The second reading for second-quarter U.S. GDP is due out at 1230 GMT, and the final reading of the July Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment report scheduled for 1355 GMT.

No major British data is sheduled for release on Friday.

Health and Fitness Level: What Is Your True Level of Health ...

Health and Fitness Level: What Is Your True Level of Health?

Article 4 of 7

This article is about the completion of a key element of the proposed medical information system?the national research center.

To realize the most from this article you need to read the 3 previous articles. However, I will try and summarize some of the key points of those articles here.

The most effective means of evaluating a person?s health would of course be through some direct means of looking into the human organism to see what is truly taking place. Fortunately, as strange as it may seem, the human body does provide such a window in the form of its biochemical makeup. Furthermore, even more encouraging, there is a science already fully developed that is taking full advantage of that body phenomenon called clinical laboratory science. These are major factors in the success any advanced health care system.

I highly recommend that you take a minute here to read what the experts have to say on that matter by clicking on the link (called page 18) at the end of this article. These experts are from text books located in the University of Michigan?s Medical Library.

As described in the link reference on page 18, the advantages of the biochemical makeup of the body is very impressive indeed. Clinical laboratory science is a highly computerized and a very rapidly moving industry. Hundreds of critical tests are now available for use. That industry is an important part of the current health care system. The blood or tissue tests that your doctor orders for you when he or she is suspicious of a given medical condition that needs verification usually involves clinical laboratory science.

The key difference between the proposed national medical information system and the current health care system lies in the difference in the use of these data. The current health care system primarily uses it to evaluate a disease condition whereas the proposed system would apply it on a broader scale basis to include disease prevention and wellness?taking advantage of far more of what clinical science has to offer.

To get a good feel of some of the amazing success in clinical laboratory science click on link (45-47) at the end of this article.

The proposed medical information system would use a completely new and far different type of application of clinical laboratory data. Far larger test profiles (100 blood constituents taken from one blood test) would be used in conjunction with a very sophisticated national research system for massive correlation to human health?including disease prevention and wellness.

Following is a remaining key element of the proposed system.
Article 3 was discussed with the use of handout A. A link to handout A is provided at the end of this article and should be referred to again here. This article will discuss the underlying technical strengths of that system by showing briefly how and why the health data fed into the national research center is so effective in its correlation to human health and wellness.

Referring back to the 100 test profile pattern discussed in article 3, it was shown that the 100 individual bits of test information along with patient environmental and patient data would be fed to the national research computer center (marked case #1). The research computers would record the profile pattern results and correlate that particular combination of test results to a particular health related condition. With the size of this 100 test profile pattern, as discussed earlier, there would be literally trillions of possible combinations involved. Of those trillions of possibilities, there would conservatively end up being at least millions of what we would call significant combinations that would represent significant health related information. The National Research Center would then relate that data to the individual?s current health condition, history, family history, the individual?s environment, and also to the same data of tens of millions of other patients. This is an enormous amount of health information for the supercomputers to pull together and relate to human health conditions!

In addition, there would no doubt also be smaller sets of tests of interest within that overall 100 test profile, such as separate groups of hormones, enzymes, antibodies and other special tests that could also be read and analyzed as separate group combinations as well. Many of us realize how very important these various groups are to our well being.

Let me stop here and review this for a moment. We talk about millions of significant health data combinations. So why is it necessary for such a breadth of examination capacity? Basically, because of the extreme complexities involving our environment, our health and of course their complex inter-relationship. For example, if we (as individuals) try to determine what it is in our environment that is having an effect on our health, either positive or negative, we know it?s usually very difficult to do. We know there are literally dozens of elements (variables) in our personal environment that could affect our health. So how do we go about narrowing it down to determine what it is in a person?s environment that is likely affecting his or her health?

The system described here does it in two ways, it uses the extreme reading breadth of the profile pattern (as discussed in article 3), to read an individuals test results along with the input of the environmental and doctor?s medical examination report. It was shown that this data was then fed into the national research center system and compared to millions of other patient?s health conditions, environments and test results.

This comparison, to the millions of other patients, would soon be very effective in narrowing the unknown element, or elements, down to the common denominator (or denominators) of what it is in the environment that normally affects people?s health in certain ways. Very few patients would have the exact same environment and health conditions. Comparing millions of patient?s health to their environmental exposures would provide a very effective screening process. The results of this research would then be fed back into the state diagnostic computers to diagnose specific individuals based on their individual profile pattern results and their individual environmental and physical examination reports.

This article discusses the key to success for any highly advanced health care system, and also the sophisticated features of the proposed medical system?s research center.

Free Legal Question: Criminal Law | Virginia | Under the Virginia ...

Under the Virginia statute of 18.2-371, if one is convicted of subsection ii, would registration as a sex offender required? I have searched high and low and the Virginia Sex Offender list of statutes that require registration does not have it as any offense that would require registration. But among more digging, it states that on the 3rd offense that it is upgraded to a class 6 felony and sex offender registration is required. My close friend is currently talking to a 17 year old female and I warned my friend to not pursue this due to the un-clear law regarding it. Can anybody please specify this for me.

This Dog-Shaped Scratching Post Is Sure To Fuel the Dogs vs. Cats Debate [Pets]

If there's one thing that can divide the nation greater than the Coke vs. Pepsi debate, it's the question of what makes the better housepet. Dog and cat supporters are fervent in their belief that their respective companions are the superior pet, and this dog-shaped scratching post doesn't help calm that debate. More »

Minnesota launches MHA program in Saudia Arabia | Advances ...

Ira Moscovice, head, Division of Health Policy and Management

The University of Minnesota School of Public Health has launched an Executive Master?s of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program at the King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) in Riyadh, Saudi. The program is the first of its kind available in Saudi Arabia.

The program will start with an initial class of 26 students from the KFMC working under the direction of School of Public Health faculty and following the same curriculum as existing Executive MHA students at the University of Minnesota?s Twin Cities campus.

Like the domestic Executive MHA program, the Saudi Arabia Executive MHA is designed for employed executives, physicians, and healthcare professionals. The program allows students to get a University of Minnesota MHA degree in 25 months.

Prospective students were nominated by KFMC leadership. They then enrolled via online application to the University of Minnesota and were accepted based on relevant criteria. More than 70 physicians, clinicians and hospital managers made initial application.

Why a satellite program?

Earlier this spring, School of Public Health professors Ira Moscovice, head of the Division of Health Policy and Management, Dan Zismer, director of the Master?s in Healthcare Administration Program, and Tom Gilliam, administrative director of executive programs, traveled to Riyadh to launch the new MHA program.

While the two institutions stand half a world apart, many of the challenges facing both countries are the same, from a growing private health insurance market to hospital competition and the need for a sufficient, dedicated primary care network, Zismer said.?

?Our full-time MHA Program continues to rank 2nd among all health management programs nationally,? Zismer added. ?Sharing our expertise abroad was the perfect next step. Problems seen in other countries mimic those we see in our healthcare systems, and it?s important to learn from each other.?

?We were immediately impressed with the caliber of students and their curiosity for debate and discussion regarding health care in the country and globally,? said Moscovice of the initial visit to Riyadh.

Leaders from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health MHA and the Division of Health Policy and Management hope this partnership is the first of many international satellite programs, to help ensure the global and local medical community moves forward together.

In their quest to treat cardiovascular disease, researchers and pharmaceutical companies have long been interested in developing new medicines that activate a heart protein called APJ. But researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) and the Stanford University School of Medicine have now uncovered a second, previously unknown, function for APJ - it senses mechanical changes when the heart is in danger and sets the body on a course toward heart failure...

Japan's nuclear fight intensifies | WTVR.com ? Richmond News ...

By Paula Hancocks, CNN

(CNN) ? The 1960s were a time of social revolution. Student, civil rights activists and anti-war protesters rose up against governments around the world, and Japan was no exception.

Hundreds of thousands took to the streets to denounce the security treaty Japan signed with the U.S. in 1960. The rallies, which turned violent at times, were the country?s last significant protests ? until now.

The recent anti-nuclear protests are gathering momentum, and a society once willing to accept the government line is starting to ask questions of its leaders.

Tens of thousands of people now protest outside the prime minister?s residence every Friday with one simple message ? abandon atomic power.

Japan?s grassroots anti-nuclear movement has been growing since last year?s devastating tsunami caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Yukiko Kamaya lives in the town of Futaba, within the 20 kilometer (12 mile) evacuation zone around the nuclear plant. She remembers the panic of running away from her home when disaster struck, not knowing where was safe and not realizing then that she would not be able to return home.

?It is my home town,? she told CNN. ?I want go back home no matter what. I want to return as soon as possible although I know it?s impossible. I hope my dream comes true one day.?

Kamaya, who now lives in temporary housing, says she felt compelled to join anti-nuclear power protests as she doesn?t want anyone else to go through what she has gone through.

This is the seventh protest Nagisa Saito has attended and she?s impressed the numbers are growing.

?What impresses me most is ? people never gave up and the crowd is getting bigger and bigger. Even on a bad rainy day like today, we see this many people gathered, it?s amazing.?

Tens of thousands are calling for no nuclear, but what is the alternative?

One man who only gave his name as Ozaki tells CNN, ?If there is a power shortage, there are alternatives. What about coal-fired power stations, hydro-electric power stations, or we can just survive with what we have. We have to be patient, but even with blackouts, we can survive without nuclear power.?

While the government can?t help but hear these voices, it has managed to resist them so far. Two nuclear reactors were brought back online this month. All 50 reactors had previously been taken offline for maintenance and tests. The government?s argument is simple: Japan needs power.

Read more: What Japanese leaders can learn from the Fukushima nuclear crisis

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told the public last month: ?In order to lead prosperous and decent lives, cheap and stable electricity is indispensable. Japanese society will not be able to function if there is a decision to permanently halt nuclear power generation.?

Masami Hasegawa is a senior manager at Japan Business Federation and agrees that Japan faces an energy crisis heading into the hot summer months. Last year rolling blackouts adversely affected business, he says.

?We hear our members saying that they cannot stay in Japan if this situation continues,? says Hasegawa. ?If the current situation continues, energy consuming industries cannot survive in Japan and they will leave. The immediate effect will be on employment which might be lost.?

But protesters say safety is more important, pointing to a recent parliament report which stated the Fukushima disaster was man-made ? a result of collusion between the plant operator, regulators and the government.

With tens of thousands of evacuees still waiting to hear when or if they can return to their homes near the plant, protesters say a no-nuclear Japan is the only acceptable result.

Prostate cancer surgery fails to cut deaths in study | Cancer Kick

Prostate cancer surgery didn?t appear to save lives compared with observation alone in a new study that tracked men for a decade after their diagnosis.

However, nearly twice as many men who had surgery reported incontinence and impotence after two years, researchers report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

?These are very compelling data,? said Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colorectal cancers at the American Cancer Society, who was not involved in the research.

Both he and study author Dr. Timothy Wilt of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine said the results suggest that many men who have received surgery in the past probably didn?t need it. ?I don?t think there?s any question that many of those cancers were overtreated,? said Brooks, who stressed that there is no way to know on an individual basis.

Prostate cancer is the second-leading killer in men, with more than 240,000 new diagnoses and 28,000 deaths every year. While many doctors still screen for the disease, more and more medical organizations are recommending against routinely doing so. And even with a cancer diagnosis, it?s not clear that aggressive treatments such as surgery or radiation are always helpful.

That?s because treatments have side effects, whereas the tumor might never have caused problems if left alone.

The new study is based on 731 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, often as a result of screening with the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Researchers then randomly assigned the men to prostate removal or observation only.

More than a decade after the tumor was discovered, 5.8 percent of the men who received surgery had died from prostate cancer or its treatment, compared to 8.4 percent of patients where doctors just kept an eye on the tumor. Overall, 47 percent of the men in the surgery group died during the study, compared to 50 percent of the others.

Both differences could have been due to chance, the researchers found. By contrast, more than one in five of the men who went under the knife experienced a complication of the surgery, including one death.

?Death from prostate cancer, with observation, was very uncommon,? Wilt told Reuters Health.

?We think our results apply to the vast majority of men diagnosed with prostate cancer today,? he said.

Cancers overtreated?

The study, which only dealt with localized tumors, leaves open the possibility that men with very high PSA levels ? greater than 10 nanograms per milliliter ? may still benefit from surgery.

About 17 percent of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, but the risk of dying from the disease is only about three percent. That?s because prostate tumors tend to grow so slowly that other health problems often kill a patient first.

?There has been a greater consideration on the part of many urologists to take less aggressive approaches with some low-grade cancer, particularly in older men,? Brooks said. ?However it?s been very difficult because cancer is such a scary word. When people hear ?cancer,? they want something done about it and they want something done yesterday.?

The study is known as PIVOT ? the Prostate Cancer Intervention Versus Observation Trial, and was first presented more than a year ago at a cancer meeting in Washington, D.C.

The men were enrolled in the study between 1994 and 2002, when PSA testing was becoming popular. Men diagnosed today, said Wilt, are probably even less likely to benefit from surgery ?because patients are picked up a lot earlier with smaller tumors. They?re very unlikely to be bothered by their cancer in their lifetime.?

At the two-year mark, 17 percent of those who had undergone surgery reported urinary incontinence. The rate was six percent in the observation group. In addition, 81 percent of surgery patients had impotence problems compared with 44 percent in the observation group.

Brooks told Reuters Health that, in the past, nine out of ten U.S. men with a prostate cancer diagnosis have chosen aggressive treatment, frequently regretting the long-term side effects.

?Probably 30 to 40 percent of men could reasonably take a less-aggressive approach to their prostate cancer,? he said.

?My hope is that men will look at this information and try to make some decisions in a less emotional way,? said Brooks. ?But the reality is, it usually takes 10 years for significant shifts in medical practice as a result of new findings in the medical literature. So it?s going to be a slow transition to get people to back away from this type of diagnosis.?

China stays silent on Syria following latest escalation of violence, intensified diplomacy

BEIJING - The Chinese government has kept silent about the civil war in Syria as violence escalates there and a vote looms at the U.N. Security Council on measures to end the fighting that Western nations fear China and Russia may veto.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon traveled to Beijing on Wednesday to convey to President Hu Jintao an urgent need for action to stop the violence amid a push to get Russia and China to back a tougher response to attacks by President Bashar Assad's regime. The two nations have repeatedly defied calls by the international community to confront Syria's regime over spiraling violence.

"I have explained how serious the situation is now and all the leaders in China have also shared my view that this situation is very serious," Ban told reporters in Beijing after talks with Hu and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

"We cannot go on this way. So many people have lost their lives during such a long time," Ban said.

The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement about Hu's meeting with Ban that the leaders discussed Syria, but did not provide details. On Thursday, many state media outlets carried reports on a deadly bombing Wednesday in Damascus that killed Syria's defense minister and his deputy, but most reports did not comment on China's position.

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled a vote Thursday on a new Syria resolution that threatens non-military sanctions against Assad's government if he doesn't withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas within 10 days. The text is tied to Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict.

Russia, a close Syrian ally, has said it will veto any Chapter 7 resolution.

Unlike Russia, China does not have longstanding strategic ties to Assad's government, but Beijing opposes setting precedents that could potentially be applied to its troubled western regions of Tibet and Xinjiang. China feels burned by Western intervention in Libya, believing that the U.S. and European powers over-interpreted a U.N. resolution to attack the government of Moammar Gadhafi, not just protect Libyan civilians.

The state-run Global Times newspaper's Chinese edition said in an editorial Thursday that Beijing should continue to align itself with Russia in voting in the U.N. Security Council.

The paper said that no matter how the situation unfolds in Syria, Beijing should maintain its position of opposing external military intervention.

"The West only wants a result that benefits their interest, and does not care if the process is peaceful," the newspaper said. "Yesterday's bloodshed in Damascus has made the West very excited. We just want to say one thing here: no matter how the Syrian situation develops later, let the process be less painful for the Syrian people."

Israel vows tough response to Iran after deadly bus attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria

SOFIA, Bulgaria - Israel vowed to strike back at Iran for a brazen daylight bombing Wednesday that killed at least seven people on a bus full of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

The bombing was the latest in a series of attacks attributed to Iran that have targeted Israelis and Jews overseas and threatened to escalate a shadow war between the two arch-enemies. Iran has denied involvement in the past but did not comment on Wednesday's attack.

President Barack Obama termed it a "barbaric terrorist attack" and called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pledge U.S. help in finding the perpetrators.

The blast gutted the bus at the airport in the quiet Black Sea resort city of Burgas, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the capital, Sofia, where the Israelis had just arrived on a charter flight from Tel Aviv carrying 154 people, including eight children.

Black smoke billowed into the sky from the stricken bus after the bomb exploded. Young Israelis said they were just boarding when the blast ripped through the white vehicle in the airport parking lot. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said at least seven people were killed.

"We were at the entrance of the bus and in a few seconds we heard a huge boom," said Gal Malka, an Israeli teenager who was slightly wounded.

The resort town has become a popular travel destination in recent years for Israelis, particularly for recent high school graduates before they are drafted for mandatory military service.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded 30 others. But suspicion immediately fell upon Iran and its Lebanese proxy, the Hezbollah guerrilla group.

"All signs point to Iran," Netanyahu said. "Just in the past few months, we have seen attempts by Iran to harm Israelis in Thailand, India, Georgia, Kenya, Cyprus and more. This is an Iranian terror attack that is spreading across the world. Israel will react forcefully to Iran's terror."

The Israeli leader gave no evidence to back his charges.

Top Israeli security officials were holding consultations late Wednesday. The Israelis said they were still weighing their options on how to respond, and there were no preparations under way for an immediate reaction.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss a sensitive security matter, said any reaction would probably be a pinpoint operation limited in scope, most likely under the auspices of the Mossad spy agency.

The officials said security officials also were concerned about further attacks, similar to a string of incidents in India, Georgia and Thailand earlier this year, and were reviewing security at potential Israeli targets, such as airline terminals and diplomatic installations.

The Bulgaria attack came exactly 18 years after the bombing of a Jewish community centre in Argentina that killed 85 people. An Argentine investigation concluded Iran was behind that attack. In addition, Israel has accused Iran of being behind a string of attacks in Europe, Asia and Africa in recent months.

The violence also came against the broader backdrop of the international standoff with Iran over its nuclear program. Israel, accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons, has repeatedly hinted it is prepared to strike Iranian nuclear targets if Tehran does not curb its suspect program.

In the past, Iran has accused Israel of being behind a series of covert attacks on Iranian nuclear targets, ranging from the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists to mysterious computer viruses that have damaged Iranian centrifuges.

Israel has never admitted to involvement, but it and others have accused Iran of reprisal missions, including a February bombing in New Delhi that wounded an Israeli diplomat's wife and the discovery of a cache of explosives in Bangkok that Thai officials claim was linked to a plot against Israeli diplomats.

Israeli officials also have long warned that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah would try to attack Israelis abroad. Hezbollah has accused Israel of assassinating a top leader in Damascus in 2008 and vowed to avenge the killing. Israel has never admitted involvement in the mysterious explosion.

In statement, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak cited Iranian-backed militants and other radical Islamic groups as the likely perpetrators of the Bulgaria bombing.

"We are in a continual fight against them. We are determined to identify who sent them, who perpetrated (the attack), and to settle the account," he said.

Israeli counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor said Wednesday's attack was "likely not the last in a series," adding, "All this looks like Hezbollah, Iran or a combination of the two."

Despite repeated alerts and concerns of an Iranian-backed attack in recent months, Israel said it had no advance intelligence on a pending attack in Bulgaria.

The attack took place near the airport, shortly after a charter flight filled with Israeli youth landed at 4:45 p.m. local time.

Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, said he was briefed by his Bulgarian counterpart and informed that a bomb was planted in the bus as it was transferring tourists from the airport.

He said six people died at the scene and another at the hospital. Two others were in critical condition.

Britain also condemned the attack, with British Foreign Secretary William Hague offering condolences to the victims' families.

Late Wednesday, Israel announced it was dispatching a military medical and relief team to Bulgaria, a country of 7.3 million bordering Greece and Turkey.

The Burgas airport was closed and traffic redirected. In Sofia, meanwhile, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova ordered a stronger police presence at all public places linked to the Jewish community. There are some 5,000 Jews in Bulgaria and most live in the capital.

China's Millionth Invention Patent, a Global Record Made in the ...

As reported, China issued a patent certificate which marked the 1 millionth invention patent granted in the country. However, it only took China 27 years to achieve that amount in the invention patent since the nation?s first patent law took effect in 1985, and it?s also the record to make that achievement in the shortest time.

China spent 6 years to see her 10, 000th invention patent in 1991, and another 12 years to total 100, 000 invention patents (2003). But it only took the country 9 years to increase from 100, 000 invention to the 1 millionth (2012). So far as is known, till the end of the 2nd season of 2012, SIPO has received 3.114 million applications for invention patents, and of the 1 million granted by the middle of July, ,518,000 came from China.

As introduced by the officer from SIPO, the patent grant in China in recent years is featured with annual vast growth in invention patent granting, growing proportion of the domestic applicant and increasing professional invention. By the end of 2011, China has issued more than 351, 000 invention patents for domestic applicants, which surpass that applied by foreign subjects in China. Meanwhile, the average patent ownership among each 10, 000 person has been 2.37.

The 1 millionth invention patent is granted for an invention that uses 3-D technology to help agricultural researchers analyze and assist crop growth, and the patentee is Beijing Research Center for Information Technology in Agriculture. The technology is a key project of the 863 Program of China, and mainly used in agricultural technology.
