New kind of extinct flying reptile discovered

Feb. 4, 2013 ? A new kind of pterosaur, a flying reptile from the time of the dinosaurs, has been identified by scientists from the Transylvanian Museum Society in Romania, the University of Southampton in the UK and the Museau Nacional in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

The fossilised bones come from the Late Cretaceous rocks of Sebe?-Glod in the Transylvanian Basin, Romania, which are approximately 68 million years old. The Transylvanian Basin is world-famous for its many Late Cretaceous fossils, including dinosaurs of many kinds, as well as fossilised mammals, turtles, lizards and ancient relatives of crocodiles.

A paper on the new species, named Eurazhdarcho langendorfensis has been published in the online journal PLoS ONE. Dr Darren Naish, from the University of Southampton's Vertebrate Palaeontology Research Group, who helped identify the new species, says: "Eurazhdarcho belong to a group of pterosaurs called the azhdarchids. These were long-necked, long-beaked pterosaurs whose wings were strongly adapted for a soaring lifestyle. Several features of their wing and hind limb bones show that they could fold their wings up and walk on all fours when needed.

"With a three-metre wingspan, Eurazhdarcho would have been large, but not gigantic. This is true of many of the animals so far discovered in Romania; they were often unusually small compared to their relatives elsewhere."

The discovery is the most complete example of an azhdarchid found in Europe so far and its discovery supports a long-argued theory about the behaviour of these types of creatures.

Dr Gareth Dyke, Senior Lecturer in Vertebrate Palaeontology, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton says: "Experts have argued for years over the lifestyle and behaviour of azhdarchids. It has been suggested that they grabbed prey from the water while in flight, that they patrolled wetlands and hunted in a heron or stork-like fashion, or that they were like gigantic sandpipers, hunting by pushing their long bills into mud.

"One of the newest ideas is that azhdarchids walked through forests, plains and other places in search of small animal prey. Eurazhdarcho supports this view of azhdarchids, since these fossils come from an inland, continental environment where there were forests and plains as well as large, meandering rivers and swampy regions."

Fossils from the region show that there were several places where both giant azhdarchids and small azhdarchids lived side by side. Eurazhdarcho's discovery indicates that there were many different animals hunting different prey in the region at the same time, demonstrating a much more complicated picture of the Late Cretaceous world than first thought.

Tackle Web Marketing Effectively With These Tips | Empower Network

Lots of entrepreneurs today use Affiliate marketing to increase business revenues. Article marketing is a great way to increase traffic to your site. If you are interested in web marketing, or would like to make better use of it, then follow the advice in this article.

The word ?limited? should be used in ads wherever possible. Many consumers have turned to online retailers because they are looking for products that are not offered in local stores. People want items that are unique and different. Limited edition products make people want to buy them to be unique, and they also prompt people to buy now, as there are only so many available.

Just in case you do not know this already, you already possess the things you need to be a winner at internet marketing. Advanced software programs are not needed to be profitable. It just takes hard work and clear thinking with regards to your approach on marketing.

When using images, always place captions near them. Search engine algorithms will factor the relevancy of text in the captions in to how relevant your site is to a keyword being searched. If you include quality descriptions of everything on your site you will ensure that your rank will raise in ranks.

If you are good at writing, write an article about your business and submit it to magazines that accept submissions. Always include your contact and business information within any articles you write. Make it a point to communicate directly with the editors and entice them with rewards if they are able to assist in article publication.

Include a guarantee to your customers as a tactic in your Internet marketing plan. Your customers will feel safer and you will be more reputable. Money back offers are an old, but effective, way to build trust, brand loyalty and increase sales.

Banner Ads

Tailor your banner ads to deviate from what people would expect a normal banner ad to look like. So try and make your banner ads stand out to have more people click on it.

Think of a service or some way to help people out that come to your site. You will get visitors to your site due to your free offer and many may stay for a time if the site interests them. Something like a calculator for tax returns might catch their eye.

Keep your Online marketing strategies fresh and stay on top of new keywords by reading online news and discussions about your product and brand. This will enable you to connect more deeply with people by using terms they are familiar and comfortable with. If you use language people understand, you will convert more customers.

You should provide quality content to your customers. Always make sure the information you offer is of high quality. Your website should teach visitors interesting things about your company and provide them with current information.

Give your customers incentives to get referrals. You can easily turn one sale into five by offering customers a free product or a refund for referring five friends to the site. Everyone loves free stuff, and the higher the level of traffic you have, the better your sales figures will be.

When you offer your customers the chance to sign up with your Ezine, you are building a relationship with these customers, and participating in a very effective marketing technique. You can experiment with adding photographs of your staff, customers, or even family. In addition, include short, funny sidelines regarding your life or your employees. Having a good subject line will encourage them to read the ezine.

Be the expert in your field. You want to make sure that you know what you are talking about when you promote your products or site, this will make the entire process easier for you.

Know what your target audience likes to read. This gives you a good starting point when planning your content.

Offer promos and sales that will drum up business. For example, you could give away an ebook free for one day only. When people see this limited time deal, they will likely buy and stick around your site. They may leave with more than just the e-book if they find something else of interest on your site.

Affiliate Marketing

Your site?s purpose is identified by the tag above it, so choose it carefully. Tags affect your search engine rankings, and the main heading tag will be visible to potential visitors. Saying the wrong thing, having confusing information or just not targeting the audience with your message can be a determining factor in whether or not prospects stay on the site.

In conclusion, many businesses use Affiliate marketing to sell products and services. Affiliate marketing uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Online marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

What school foods are in and what foods are out

The Agriculture Department is proposing new nutritional rules that would apply to most all foods sold in schools. The rule would apply to "a la carte" lines in school cafeterias, vending machines, snack bars and any other food sold regularly on campus. It wouldn't apply to fundraisers, after-school concession stands, class parties or foods brought from home.

Most every food sold in school would be subject to fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits. Snack foods would have to be under 200 calories and have some nutritional value. Drinks would be limited to 12-ounce portions in middle schools and 8-ounce portions in elementary schools.

Some examples of what could be in and out under the rules, provided the items meet or don't meet all of the requirements:

At least 5 killed in Senegal's restive south

ZIGUINCHOR, Senegal (AP) ? A town leader says that at least five people have been killed after rebels in Senegal's restive south raided a village and targeted a bank.

Sana Diassy, the president of the rural community of Kafountine about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Zinguinchor, says a group of 30 men armed with rifles stole a large sum from a local bank. He said soldiers responded and at least two rebels and three villagers were killed in the fighting.

The Movement of the Democratic Forces of Casamance has waged a low-level insurgency against Senegal's government since the early 1980s.

Casamance has been plagued by sporadic violence as the rebels have fought for independence and against each other. The Casamance region is separated from the rest of Senegal by the nation of Gambia.

Flustered Chuck, Dolphins Who Fish, and Neolithic Curry

Former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel pauses as he testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing.

?Fluster Chuck: Did anyone tell Chuck Hagel there would be questions?? by?David Weigel. Weigel assesses Chuck Hagel?s performance in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, writing that the former Nebraska senator ?searched for words like he was trapped in a closet, grasping for a dropped flashlight.? While Hagel may have succeeded in maintaining Democratic support for his nomination to be defense secretary, Weigel argues, his contrition and lack of confidence in the face of intense questioning didn?t advance his cause with Republican critics.

Roman describes the surprising relationship between untrained dolphins and those in this city?s fishing community who are employing would-be rivals to their mutual advantage.

?The Case for Torture: What really happened in the CIA?s ?enhanced? interrogations? Three former officials tell their stories,? William Saletan.?A forum at the American Enterprise Institute on Tuesday had three former CIA officials discussing the ethics and efficacy of the enhanced interrogation techniques used against al-Qaida in the war on terror. Saletan summarizes the arguments made in favor of these techniques, which, he writes, ?shook up? his assumptions about the interrogation program.?

?Don?t Repay the National Debt: It?s time to revive a British financial innovation from the 18th century: perpetual bonds,? by Matthew Yglesias.?Despite extremely low interest rates, worries about the mounting debt mean we?re not borrowing as much as we should, argues Yglesias. The solution may be ?consols,? or perpetual bonds, which bear higher interest rates without a promise of repaying the principle.

?Tear Down the Swing Sets: And the plastic forts. Here?s how to put the?play back in playgrounds,? by Nicholas Day.?The threat of injury and legal action has made American playgrounds built in the last several decades unappealing and boring, claims Day. Nevertheless, architect David Rockwell?s Imagination Playground in Lower Manhattan has sparked a revolution in playground design with ?loose parts? as the key to restoring creativity to children?s play.

American incomes rise by most in eight years

47 min.

Reuters

American incomes rose in December by the most in eight years, a positive sign for consumer spending that could help the economy sustain momentum early this year.?

Personal income for Americans rose 2.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. That was the biggest increase since December 2004 and well above analysts' expectations for a 0.8 percent gain.?

Personal income rose in November and December, the Commerce Department said, because of special dividends and accelerated bonuses to beat increases in taxes this year.?

The big rise in incomes suggests total consumer spending power entered the new year on stronger footing, even though much of the gains may not have been distributed evenly throughout the workforce.?

The economy faces the threat of across-the-board spending cuts scheduled for March, as well as the possibility the government might default later this later year and trigger another recession.?

After-tax income climbed 2.7 percent in December, the strongest since May 2008, while consumer spending rose 0.2 percent, just below the pace expected by analysts in a Reuters poll.?

Excluding the one-off factors that boosted incomes in December, after-tax income rose 0.4 percent.?

PFT: Urlacher has to take pay cut to stay with Bears

Ravens linebackers coach Ted Monachino is aware of the reports that he could be the Eagles? next defensive coordinator, but he says media reports are all he knows about it.

?I haven?t been contacted and neither has the club. I?m doing everything I can to get us ready for this game,? Monachino told me today at the Ravens? team hotel.

Monachino said he respects the work Kelly did at Oregon but doesn?t know Kelly personally and doesn?t have any idea if Kelly would be interested in bringing him on board in Philadelphia.

?I don?t know Chip,? Monachino said. ?It?s a great opportunity for him in Philly and it?ll be interesting to see how that type of system works with a 53-man roster and see if they can get it done. If they can, it?s going to be interesting for sure.?

Although 49ers running back LaMichael James, who played for Kelly at Oregon, said this week that the 49ers? offense is similar to Kelly?s offense, Monachino said that as a defensive coordinator preparing to face the 49ers, he doesn?t see much similar to what he has seen the Ducks do.

?Not very similar,? Monachino said. ?The biggest thing that I?ve seen when I?m watching college games on television on Saturday nights, the tempo that they do at Oregon is problematic, and completely different from the tempo that San Francisco has used. Some of the read option things are similar, but I think the tempo more than anything they do at Oregon is what causes people problems and we?ll see if coach Kelly can do that in Philadelphia.?

Monachino said the 49ers, who can run their running back behind a fullback and also get yardage on the ground with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, use a different offense than he has previously seen in the NFL.

?Nobody is similar to what the 49ers have done. They?re still a physical, downhill running team, and the quarterback just adds something,? Monachino said.

According to Monachino, the NFL team that runs the most similar offense to Kelly is New England: No one will mistake Tom Brady for a read-option running threat that Kelly?s Oregon quarterbacks have been, but Monachino said the way Brady calls plays quickly at the line of scrimmage is similar to what Kelly has his quarterbacks do.

?New England has some of those things in their system where they have some single-word calls that get them in a certain formation and play. Those things are similar to two-minute tempo throughout the course of the game,? Monachino said.

Monachino respects that about New England, and Chip Kelly. But he isn?t talking to Kelly about joining his staff. At least not yet.
