Saudi Arabia executes 7 in first-ever firing squad

Saudi Arabia executes 7 men found guilty of theft, looting, and armed robbery. The 7 were executed in the first-ever firing squad execution in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia has executed 23 people so far this year.

?Seven Saudi men convicted of theft, looting and armed robbery were executed on Wednesday, according to the country's official news agency, more than a week after their families and a rights group appealed to the king for clemency.

The executions took place in Abha, a city in the southern region of Asir, the Saudi Press Agency said. A resident who witnessed the execution said the seven were shot dead by a firing squad, a first in the kingdom, which traditionally has beheaded convicts sentenced to death.

The witness spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution.

Amnesty International called the executions an "act of sheer brutality."

"We are outraged by the execution of seven men in Saudi Arabia this morning. We oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, but this case has been particularly shocking," said Philip Luther, Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa director.

"It is a bloody day when a government executes seven people on the grounds of 'confessions' obtained under torture, submitted at a trial where they had no legal representation or recourse to appeal," Luther said.

The New-York based Human Rights Watch said at least two of the seven were under 18 at the time of the alleged crimes.

"These executions are yet another example of Saudi Arabia's complete disregard of international human rights standards," said Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. "Saudi authorities need to uphold their human rights obligations and cease these horrifying executions of juvenile offenders."

The south has been marginalized and suffered discrimination by the powerful central region where the capital, Riyadh, and the holy shrines of Mecca and Medina are located.

The seven were arrested in 2006 and received death sentences in 2009, a Saudi newspaper reported at the time. The case was back in focus after Human Rights Watch earlier this month called for the sentences to be canceled because the men were juveniles at the time of their arrest.

One of the men told The Associated Press in early March that he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005. Nasser al-Qahtani said he was tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers.

Al-Qahtani said that during the years-long trial, he only faced the judge three times and when the men tried to complain to the judge about the torture or show torture marks on their bodies, they were ignored. He also said the judge never assigned him a lawyer.

The original sentences called for death by firing squad and crucifixion.

The oil-rich kingdom follows a strict implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, under which people convicted of murder, rape or armed robbery can be executed, usually by sword.

On Sunday, a Saudi paper reported that the government is looking into formally dropping public beheadings as a method of execution and instead considering death by a firing squad as an alternative. There have also been calls in the kingdom to replace public beheadings with lethal injections carried out in prisons.

Local observers said there are fewer people willing to carry out beheadings.

Saudi Arabia has executed 23 people so far this year, including the seven men on Wednesday. Last year it executed 76 people and in 2011, 79.

Also, several people were reported crucified in Saudi Arabia last year. Human rights groups have condemned crucifixions, including cases in which people were beheaded and then crucified. In 2009, Amnesty International condemned such executions as "the ultimate form of cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment."

On March 4, Human Rights Watch appealed to King Abdullah not to execute the seven men and said there was "strong evidence" that they did not get a fair trial.

"It is high time for the Saudis to stop executing child offenders and start observing their obligations under international human rights law," said Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East director at HRW.

The following day, the king ordered a one-week suspension until the case was reviewed.

The Washington-based Institute of Gulf Affairs, which campaigned for the suspension of the executions of the seven men, recently said in a note to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that one of the reasons the seven were sentenced to death was that "they hail from the south, a region that is heavily marginalized by the Saudi monarchy, which views them as lower class citizens."

PFT: 'Mutiny' may be behind Ravens' roster purge

pg2_g_polian_300Getty Images

Two days ago, former NFL General Manager Bill Polian said he didn?t think running back Reggie Bush was worth much in free agency. Today, after Bush signed with the Lions, Polian changed his tune.

Appearing on ESPN?s NFL Live, Polian was asked which of today?s free agent signings he liked the best, and he said Bush to Detroit will be a game changer.

?I like the Reggie Bush,? Polian said. ?And what it tells you is they?re going to be the Greatest Show on Turf. Think Marshall Faulk ? because that?s the kind of back he really is.?

Polian, of course, is the man who traded Faulk from Indianapolis to St. Louis and allowed the Rams to build the Greatest Show on Turf offense. It?s a little strange to hear Polian use a player he traded away as the basis for comparison when singing the praises of another player whose value Polian was just minimizing two days ago. But it got even stranger.

Two days ago, Polian said of Bush, ?He?s not a three-down back anymore. He?s got seven years in, that?s a lot of shelf life for a running back. He?s had injuries. He?s not a great blocker.?

Today, Polian said of Bush, ?He?ll be a three-down back, there?s no two ways about it, because he can come out of the backfield in that spread that they use any time, and a quarterback will find him. He can run those choice routes. He can run the draw. He can do all of those things and he adds explosion to an offense that already had some.?

Why did Polian change his tune? Who knows? But Lions fans will have to hope Bill Polian on Wednesday was right, and Bill Polian on Monday was wrong.

Google Translate has been steadily gaining new features, most recently adding translations from cameras and suggesting synonyms for your searched-for words. The latest addition, Phrasebook, lets you save translations for later reference. In practice, it's quite similar to starring items in your Gmail inbox; simply click the star icon under your translated text, and the sentence (or words) in question will be saved to your Phrasebook. To view all your saved translations, you simply click on the "Show Phrasebook" icon located in the top-right, and hovering over the text will give you the option to listen to each phrase. Controls let you search the saved phrases by language pairing or by searching specific phrases. We don't know about you, but we're already hard at work memorizing "Welcome to San Francisco!" in 50-some languages ahead of Engadget Expand this weekend.

Topic: Effective Blurb Copy

Speaker: Sally Felt

Richardson Public Library

900 Civic Center Dr.

Richardson TX 75080

Effective blurb copy is crucial for self-published authors, but it's also important for querying/pitching to editors and agents and lining up promotional interviews. Knowing how important it is doesn't make it any easier for most of us to do. Using examples from various genres and 30 years of copywriting experience, author Sally Felt will share techniques, tools and tips to help writers feel better prepared?or at least more inspired?to write a selling blurb.

Sally Felt built a thirty year career as an advertising copywriter, creating brochures, web sites, ads and speeches for an international clientele. To live life more purposefully, Felt downgraded her full-time responsibilities, and now uses the extra time to conduct playshops, which help others find their own map to fun and to write books filled with characters who are learning to leap. In addition to writing, speaking and adventuring, Felt takes on freelance copywriting jobs from time to time. Her erotic romance novel "Going Native" was published in January 2013.

Google Now For iPhone and iPad ad - Business Insider

A very Google-like ad showing off the search giant's Google Now service for iPhone and iPad appeared online today, but was promptly pulled, reports Engadget.

Google Now uses a variety of information about a user?everything from emails to their current location?to display potentially useful information, like the current status of an upcoming plane flight.?

Last year, we reported that the service was on its way to Apple's mobile devices but we didn't know when. From this video, it seems like we may be getting closer to a launch date.

Everyone who uses it seems to love Google's Now service, which is currently available on Android phones. While it's been compared to Apple's Siri voice-command system, it's really something different.

It's been very well received because the service gets to know you and predicts things you'll ask it for like, directions home that avoid traffic, information for an upcoming flight, or the latest sports scores.

Google Now is deeply integrated into Google's Android operating system. It's not clear how deeply Apple would let a service like Google Now embed itself in iPhone or iPad devices. Still, Google Now could approximate its Android capabilities by using push notifications and Apple's Passbook feature.?

This is another example of Google moving to dominate Apple on Apple's own mobile-software platform?as it's done by releasing iPhone and iPad versions of Google Maps which outperform Apple's built-in Maps software.

One key reason for Google to release an iOS version of Google Now: Google Glass, the company's experimental Internet-connected headset, which made a big, buzzy appearance at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, this week.

Google Now is integrated into Google Glass, and adds to the device's functionality. This would be the perfect way for Google Glass to pair with iPhones and iPads.

For comparison, Engadget also posted the original Google Now ad, which looks almost exactly like the one above?except for the Apple devices:

Motorola X: 5 Reasons Google Might Launch Android 5 Key Lime Pie with Own Device

Motorola X could be the 2013 smartphone to launch Android 5 Key Lime Pie. Google has always downplayed its acquisition of Motorola in 2011 to reassure Android licensees of fair trade. But are there basis to rumours sparking anticipation of an X Phone on Android 5 coming out soon?

Phonesreview.co.uk recently published this Motorola X Phone concept. The site reported designer Jason Chen's best guess as to how the next Google flagship phone will look like.

Phonesreview.co.uk recently published this Motorola X Phone concept. The site reported designer Jason Chen's best guess as to how the next Google flagship phone will look like.

Android fans are now excited about Google's annual event for developers, the I/O conference, which will transpire in May this year. This same event launched Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in June last year. The Google-Asus Nexus 7 tablet was the first to run on Android 4. Instead of looking at a Nexus 7 upgrade, some tech analysts are pointing to Motorola X for this year's big Android announcement.

Here are 5 reasons behind the possibility that Google would launch Android 5 with its Motorola X phone.

5. An Android executive at Google has recently highlighted the nature of its relationship with Motorola. Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for Android at Google, has said: "It's almost as if [Motorola is] a separate company." It can be interpreted in such a way that Google is speaking to its other partners. A Motorola X hopeful could put it this way: 'We will launch Android 5 with Motorola X, but you have no reason to worry. Motorola is just like you, a partner.'

4. Launching Android 5 on a Nexus 7 upgrade (rumoured to be called Nexus 7.7) is fine. But launching the latest Android on a smartphone is a better, bolder statement. Google has to rise to the challenge being posed by new smartphone releases, including HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4 among others.

3. Google-LG Nexus 4 smartphone was released only in November last year. The release was followed by months of agonizing period of waiting for early buyers. A Nexus 5 launch in May would be infuriating for many gadget shoppers.

2. Innovation spins the game in the tech industry. Whatever innovative ideas Google has developed since the last I/O event, it might want to demo the execution using its own purebred Google device. Any integration of existing and emerging Google services (Gmail and Google + among others) will look great in a pure Google device.

1. "We've inherited 18 months of pipeline that we actually have to drain right now, while we're actually building the next wave of innovation and product lines," Google CFO Patrick Pichette has been quoted as saying, in relation to the Motorola acquisition. Considering that this deal was announced in a statement in August 2011 (for $12.5 billion), Google should be ready to introduce Motorola X, the very first Google Motorola Mobility device by now.
