Got illness? Here are tips for giving medicine to kids and teens ...

If there's been a lot of sneezing and coughing in your home lately, you might have wondered about medicine safety. Here's a post from February with information on free video resources.

Getting the right dose of the right medicine into your child at the right time can be a challenge. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers a series of videos on YouTube, including ones on dosing your young child and helping your older child learn to manage medicines solo.

In "Giving Medicine to Children," Benjamin Ortiz, a pediatrician with the FDA, lists ways you can make taking medicine a little more pleasant for you and your child. Some are common-sense, such as mixing meds with applesauce or pudding when possible, but you may hear some tricks you hadn't thought of.

In "Teaching Kids About Using Medicine Safely," Ortiz outlines how to teach kids about medicine safety, such as walking them through how to read labels and explaining why taking more than one medicine at a time can be dangerous.

The video series has many more titles. Click on the tab above the window where the video plays to subscribe to the video series. It's worth exploring the FDA website, where they offer information tailored to parents, seniors, women, minorities, etc. as well as alerts on recalls and other consumer safety information.
